I bought a used eos 5D the other day, took some test shots with it and the EF 50mm 1.8II. Had to sent it to repair service as i had some issues with it, so until it comes back, i'm not gonna be able to put up any REAL images shot with it. But these test shots show the ability to get an amazingly shallow depth of field. shot at ~f/2.2, ISO 1250.

The first three pictures below have been taken with a ridicilously cheap digital camera, which also has three years of life behind it. Still takes photos, though sometimes the autofocus isn't quite there and some pictures have a weird green tint to them. The last two pictures i took with my EOS 450D with a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 attached to it. (During te last two it was night time, and i had to use some pretty long shutter speeds and even then i had to open the darks up in lightroom quite a bit. That's why all the grain and noise is there.) (A finnish night this time of year is pitch black if there are no artificials light sources nearby.)

New camera?

I'm really thinking about getting a new camera one of these days. I'm kinda stuck between a used EOS 5D, a new EOS 550D and an EOS 7D. Which of these would you get?

With 5D's full frame sensor, i would be able to take full advantage of canons sharpest primes, like 24mm/1.4L II or 35mm/1.4L Or i could go cheap with EF 24/2.8 and EF 35/2.0 which are both very good lenses. 5D is also built like a tank, it has a way nicer grip than my current EOS 450D and it just looks damn good. If i bought the 5d, i would have to buy new lenses also. And the 5D is getting really old-fashioned, all with it's digic II and all...

Now the 7D has way better auto-focus than the 5D, it has a digital leveler and blah blah blah... It also has the ability to shoot amazing video in 1080p/30, 25 or 24 fps. It also has 720p video at 50/60fps for impressive slowdowns. If this was a full frame camera, there would be no doubt i'd be getting this one. But it's not. It has a tiny aps-c sensor, like my 450D. Though with this camera i could use my current lenses, sigma 10-20, tamron 17-50, ef-s 55-250... The problem is... I kinda really want full frame! the 7D is also much more expensive than a used 5D. And i don't really need 18mp resolution, the filesize of those photos... huge! Though i could use the sRAW1 and sRAW2 solutions for this problem...

The 550D is essentially a cut-down version of the 7D. It's smaller, plastic-y, not that good auto-focus... But nonetheless it seems like a great piece of technology, especially for the price. It has amazing video abilities. But it has the same problems as 7D, it's just not full frame, plus it has a few problems of it's own like being plastic and small. It is very cheap though. And i could use my 450D's grip to make it feel like a real camera. And it's really cheap, cheaper than a used 5D.

Which one to get??

PS. i didn't include the 5d mark II 'cause it doesn't have 1080p/24fps (what's that about?) and because it's so damn expensive :(

So, as you can see, i changed the layout a bit. Quite radically, actually. I don't know if i like it yet, but it has one good side. My first shoot-out at the new city, Jyväskylä. Shot with my EOS 50 film camera, with the EF 50mm 1.8 II on its nose with a couple of Cokin equivalents mounted. These are almost straight-off-camera, with just a little basic sharpening/contrast add here and there (not on all images). I was surprised how good these came out! Take a look!

Windows 7 on acer aspire one A110

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my acer aspire one A110, 1.6Ghz Intel Atom, 8GB hard drive, 512KB memory and an intel GMA950 graphics card. As you can see, it runs quite slowly, and for that, i'm not going to leave it on my netbook. Eeebuntu runs quite nicely on it, think maybe i'll reinstall that for it. Sorry for poor video, i don't have an actual video camera, or even a web camera, this was shot via a hack with my canon eos 450D.

Hello!

so i was shooting today with my girlfriends EOS 300D (My 450D is on repair service...). I found this old firmware hack for the 300D from the net, that allowed one to use ISO 3200 on the camera! I had to try it out, of course. I also tried to get to ISO 12800 by underexposing purposefully and then normalizing the exposure later in PostProcessing. Here's what i got:

It's a fisheye lens with 180 degree field of view. And it's cheap, only ~250€!

Review

It takes good pictures for its price. I'm so in love with the lens. It is fully manual, which, for me, is only interesting, not a weakness. Photographing with manual lens takes more skill, and while using one, you learn. So using this lens is supposed to be quite a learning experience. It has a lens hood built in, which, to me, appears exotic, too, making the lens even more interesting.

Hey fellas! Today I'm proud to represent some photos I took down at the beach the other day. They're shot with Canon EOS 50, a Film SLR from mid 90's. Photos do have that cosy, warm film feel to them with all the film grain and dust etc. I like the effect. Shot with the 28-80mm Canon kit lens with a cheap hoya circular polarizer on its nose. Enjoy!

Edit: This was shot another day at the same location with EOS 450D + tamron 17-50mm and no filters and with a relatively slow shutter speed.

Macro shooting - With a little help of toilet paper roll

So I had nothing to do one day, so I tried a little trick with my EF nifty-fifty and a toilet paper roll. I put the roll in between the lens and the body - it degreases the lenses minimum focusing distance, making the lens able to take macro shots. Not very well, but... you know. The autofocus doesn't work and you can't control the aperture, so this way is a little difficult. The depth of field is also very, very small, which makes the manual focusing even harder. You need a pair of very steady legs or a tripod. This is what the setting looked like:

Twilight

Just saw it yesterday. I hadn't read the book, so I had basically no idea whatsoever about this film. It surprised me. I wasn't exactly waiting to see vampires who are that powerful or who do not die in sunshine. I expected it to be more like tru blood, you know, with a little twist of classic teenage Romeo and Juliet perhaps.

The make-up was overdone from time to time, the vampires looked silly, but not all the time. Other than that it was quite a joy for the eye.

In this world being a vampire didn't really seem to be a curse. I mean, they did not die as easily as, for example, Anne Rices vampires die. They didn't need to sleep trough days in a coffin. They lived forever and, apparently, had amazing powers. They also appeared to be incredibly sexy. The only weakness they had was the thirst of blood. Well, i suppose that can be a problem, if you want to be an ethically good vampire. But if you live forever, what is there to be ethically good about? Everyone around you die anyway. Doesn't make sense.

It was more a good movie than it was a bad one. I felt that it left a little short, the book was perhaps smashed down into an inch too short of a movie. It could have been more philosophical, more romantic and more about the battle of emotions inside the loving couple. If that makes any sense to you.

Yah, that's about it this time. I would recommend watching this movie, it's an ok piece of art.

I thought Hellboy II: The golden army could be a good movie. Don't know haven't seen it yet. I figured I'd first watch the first movie of the hellboy series, you know, the one released in the year 2004. So i watched it. Didn't like it, a damn waste of time it was. It seemed like the plot was just even barely there at all, and the action wasn't worth it either. Big red idiot smashing everything that comes in to its sight? What is the point? It was a B-rank movie without a doubt, made just for the fun of making it, so it seems. Tell me, is the Hellboy II: The golden army any better? should I waste my time watching it?

Canon eos 500D

Ok, so my camera, the 450D, is officially out of date now. There's a new entry-level model from Canon on the market, the 500D, or as the US market calls it, the Rebel T1i. There's a huge number of improvements made in this model, the usual processor (DIGIC 4 vs DIGIC III) and megapixel (15.1mpx vs 12.2mpx) upgrade, plus a whole bunch of something totally different, like the ability to shoot 1080p videos with the camera, and the face detection in Live View mode. Wow, that's something new, i thought.

Why put together a friggin' video camera with a dSLR? Well, the reasons are numerous. First of all, i think, especially in a consumer priced camera, like the 500D, it's a damn cheap solution. You don't have to buy a video camera and a dSLR separately any more, and also pay for each separately, which is something that a consumer, me for an example, could easily not afford. Another interesting point is that you can shoot videos with a large selection of easily mountable lenses, like the ef-s 18-200 is, or the Great 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, the possibilities are ineffable. You can even take videos with a FishEye, how's that sound?

The 500D really is interesting. I would like to try it sometime. I don't think i'll buy one of these babes anytime soon, though. If a sudden desire for a new camera strikes me, I'll wait for the EOS 60D. Realistically though, I can't afford a new camera probably until the EOS 80D or 90D comes out.

Hello dear listeners!

Umm, where do I start... It's been a long time since i've updated the last, prolly the 'cause of lack of inspiration. But! I've now upgraded my photographing gear with a brand new Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens, so i think it's safe to say that i'm back in the game. I'm still a very much of a beginner when it comes to photography, but I enjoy doing it and am very eager to learn more. Anycase, here are some shots i've taken with the new equipment:

Heh, came to visit home after two long work weeks in Pietarsaari. I woke up in the morning and thought that wow, it's beautiful outside, if only i had a camera. Of course i didn't have my own with me, forgot it in Pietarsaari. So i borrowed my dads old 4 megapixel Canon PowerShot A80 from 2002-2004 or something. Here are some shots i shot with it.

Again, pictures are as-shot and blogger-scaled (bloggers scaling is surprisingly good, btw.)

So, here are finally some shots taken with the new lens. Nothing fancy, just some testing, in doors shot basic shit. I'm posting from a net-book, so the images are as-shot, non-enhanced-in-any-way-with-a-computer, and scaled by crabby automatic scaling of the blogger, hope that will not be a prob.

Hei!

So i finally got my new lens for the camera! It's a sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4.0, and so far it seems to be an alright piece of camera equipment. I'll be posting some pictures taken with it soon. In the meantime, let's all have a look at the oil computer, shall we? here is a pic:

The yellow stuff there is turnip rape oil. The configuration was totally silent, except for the humming of the hard drive (can be seen on top of the CD-drive there) as the oil made certain that the humming coolers of the processor and the power supply were silenced by it. This was just a prototype, so not all of the computer was submerged and it didn't look very beautiful either. But it was dead silent, imagine that.

I had also made an enhanced version of this piece of machinery, but it broke before i photographed it. The enhanced version included water bottles and ice and stuff. Surprisingly water was not the reason it broke down, it was overheating. Maybe one day i'll make a new one, if i still have the inspiration. Prolly not.

Hei yall!

Havent been updating in a while now, 'cause of lack of inspiration. I sold my 18-55mm kit lens away and i wont be getting my new lens until next week, so that's prolly why i havent been taking much pictures. I did a photoshoot at my work though, but i dont have permission to publish any of those, so here we are.

Ps. My turnip rape oil computer broke off. But i'll still prolly put out some pictures of it next week.

Yeah its true. I have a little old computer here, i'm sitting in front of it, posting, right now. It's submerged in turnip rape oil, it has a water bottle and a bottle of ice to keep it quiet and cooled, it's really cool looking :) going to post pictures about it soon...

Hi,

Just saw the new Paramore video (well, at least it's new in here Finland) and i've got to ask, what is up? I used to like Paramore, they threw an amazing gig last summer in Provinssirock, Seinäjoki (near my home!). Now this new video does not sound like Paramore to my ear, it sounds like some random Within Temptation clone. Emo metal, that is the definition. Are you guys going commercial? I think you are!

My lovely girlfriend, swinging. Photo taken in a park in Pietarsaari, Finland. Converted to jpeg from RAW with BibblePro 4.10 and then converted to Black and White with gimp, added sharpness, no other adjustments.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS. This lens has a poor light power to match Finland's dark times, but in the summer/early autumn it is still very usable.

I personally LOVE this photo. Oh, and I love my girlfriend as well.

Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro

After putting an enormous amount of thought into it, i desided to go with the lens mentioned it the title. Its affordable with my budget (barely though), does a great job in poorly lit places (such as Finland in winter) and, for the price, it delivers incredible image quality. It is best at portrait (which will be the main focus of this lens) and macro shots. It is not bad in landscape photography either. Just the perfect lens for my needs. Now i only need to gather up some money...

Frustrating. I, like, have to spend two months without eating just to get this lens. Better be as good as they say.
